Moray Factsheet

Moray

Moray is situated just to the east of Inverness and offers a microcosm of all the Highland landscapes in an easily accessible area which is ideal for filming purposes.

Fertile farmlands give way to sand-dunes and beautiful long, sandy beaches, while the modern and pretty harbours of the quaint coastal communities retain tradition values and imagery, giving shelter from the powerful North Sea. Castles and abbeys stand alongside Roman, Viking and Pictish heritage, and there is a plethora of picturesque hamlets amidst unspoilt countryside.  Top-class country house hotels can be found scattered around its rural corners, as well in the heart of the main population centres of Forres, Elgin, Lossiemouth and Buckie.

The south of the area provides a patchwork of colours with its purple heather moors, farmers fields of gold, green and frothy Highland streams and the unpolluted River Spey meanders its way to the sea passing many whisky distilleries on the way.

Weather conditions are generally favourable throughout the year, relatively frost-free due to the proximity of the sea, while inland winter offers the opportunity to film in spectacular snow-scapes. Morays many communities are served by a spiders web of roads and tree-lined avenues, cutting across forest and farmland.

In the summer, Moray enjoys exceptionally long periods of daylight. Heavy industry has failed to infiltrate this scenic part of Scotland, meaning that the air is pure and unpolluted, offering excellent filming conditions.

ACCESS:

Moray is well-served by airports at Inverness to the west and Aberdeen in the east, which both offer direct connections from most UK and international destinations. A regular train service runs between Inverness and Aberdeen, offering routes to the south of England, while the road systems are modern
and well-maintained.

The Scottish Highlands and Islands Film Commission office for the Moray area can be contacted for
more detailed information on their services and facilities, including free advice and information on locations, accommodation and crew, as well as access to the extensive photographic library.
