Forget Gotham City, Inverness is Batman’s new stomping ground as the trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming blockbuster, The Dark Knight Rises, proves.

A 200-strong film crew arrived in the Highlands in 2011 to shoot the audacious aerial sequence visible in new footage released this week.

Inverness Airport was the location decided upon by filmmakers to open the $250 million film, the third in Warner Bros hugely successful series starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne aka Batman. An airstrip in the Cairngorms was also used for parachute jumps, with a private jet flown out of Cairngorm Gliding Club’s site at Feshie Bridge.

More than £1.1 million was generated to the Highland economy during the production’s visit to the area, with local accommodation providers and service suppliers assisting throughout.

Inverness Airport is just one of dozens of locations available to filmmakers, with the full list available in the The Highlands of Scotland Film Commission locations database.

The Dark Knight Rises opens in UK cinemas on 20 July 2012.
