Highlands-set Disney Pixar animation, Brave, opened in US cinemas on Friday to both impressive reviews and high ticket sales.

The film, which is set in 10th Century Scotland and features the voices of Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson and Kelly Macdonald, earned $66.7m over the weekend, beating other blockbusters to first place in the box office charts.

Although Brave wasn’t shot in Scotland, the film’s creators made two trips to the Highlands in 2006 and 2007 to get a feel for the country, visiting locations such as Urquhart Castle and Eilean Donan Castle. Various aspects of the Highland scenery made it into the final film, which opens in Scottish cinemas on 3 August and around the UK on 17 August.
